Heating is one of the biggest running costs in most properties. The good news is that a few simple changes can make your system work better without a big outlay.
Bleed your radiators
If a radiator is warm at the bottom but cold at the top, there may be air trapped inside. Bleeding the radiator lets the air out so that hot water can fill it properly. Check the pressure on your boiler afterwards, as it may need topping up.
Use your controls properly
A programmer or smart thermostat lets you heat your property only when you need it. Set the heating to come on shortly before you get up or arrive, and to go off before you leave. Thermostatic radiator valves let you turn down radiators in rooms you rarely use. Small adjustments to the temperature and timings can add up over a season.
Do not block your radiators
Furniture in front of a radiator and long curtains hanging over it trap heat and stop it reaching the room. Leave space around radiators so that warm air can circulate.
Look at your boiler settings
Many modern condensing boilers work more efficiently at a lower flow temperature. This is worth asking an engineer about, because the right setting depends on your boiler and your radiators.
Keep your boiler serviced
A boiler that is looked after runs more reliably and more efficiently. Read our guide on how often to service your boiler.
Keep the heat in
- Insulate your loft and any exposed hot water pipes
- Draught-proof doors and windows
- Close curtains at dusk to keep warmth in
- Heat the rooms you actually use
When to think about an upgrade
If your boiler is old, keeps needing repairs or struggles to keep the property warm, a new boiler or heating system with modern controls can be cheaper to run. For some properties, renewable options such as a heat pump may also be worth looking at. They are not right for every building, so it is worth getting proper advice before you decide.
